I had the opportunity to connect with a friend of one of our team members recently, and somewhere in the middle of that conversation something sparked. He shared some of his work, rooted in part in the five styles of thinking, and I found myself thinking about how it connects to what we do every day in learning space integration.

That night I sat up thinking about it. In the work I do around learning space design, we talk constantly about learning styles, teaching methods, instructional models. Those conversations are important and familiar. But thinking styles — the way a mind actually constructs meaning, approaches a problem, and engages with ideas? I had to be honest: we don’t lean into that nearly enough.

And the more I sat with it, the more I kept coming back to the same question. If we are truly committed to being radically student centered — and that commitment is at the core of everything I do in my daily work — then shouldn’t the way students think be just as central to how we design the spaces they learn in?

I think the answer is yes.

The Why Gets Lost Too Soon

Here is something I have seen happen on more school projects than I care to count. A district embarks on a renovation or new build with real excitement and real vision. Educators talk about collaboration, student ownership, personalized learning. The conversations are inspiring. And then, somewhere along the way, someone opens a catalog — and the conversation shifts to desks and chairs.

Not because anyone made a bad decision. But because the why never got fully established before the what took over.

Kevin Stoller captures this moment precisely in his recent piece for Essentials Magazine:

“When learning spaces are treated as static containers instead of dynamic systems, even the best instructional ideas struggle to take hold. Educators adapt their practice to fit the room rather than the room adapting to the learner. That’s not a failure of leadership or effort. It’s a failure of alignment.”

That failure of alignment is what Learning Space Integration exists to prevent — ensuring that architecture, furniture, instructional practice, and the student experience are all pulling in the same direction from the very beginning. And it starts by asking better questions, earlier. Not “what furniture are we specifying?” but “what do we want students to be able to do, think, and experience here?”

The Five Styles of Thinking: A Framework Worth Revisiting

Allen Harrison and Robert Bramson, in their book The Art of Thinking, identified five distinct cognitive styles — not personality types or ability levels, but preferred ways of processing the world. Every person carries all five, though most of us lean on some more than others. And every one of them has something to say about the kind of environment it needs to flourish.

The Synthesist thinks through contrast and conflict. They learn by pushing ideas against each other, finding the creative tension in disagreement. A Synthesist thriving looks like a student who comes alive in debate. A Synthesist struggling looks like a student who seems disruptive — often because the space gives their natural thinking style nowhere constructive to go.

The Idealist leads with values and the bigger picture. They need to understand why something matters before they can engage with how. They are deeply attuned to community and belonging, and a cold, institutional environment doesn’t just feel unwelcoming to them — it genuinely interferes with their ability to engage and learn.

The Pragmatist is wired to experiment. They learn by doing, adjusting, doing again. They are the students who rearrange the furniture before you have finished giving instructions — not out of defiance, but because they are already iterating. Rigid, immovable environments are real cognitive friction for them.

The Analyst needs depth and quiet. Logic, evidence, sequence — these are how they make meaning. They need time to process before they are ready to contribute, and noise or visual chaos doesn’t just bother them — it shuts down their thinking. Many of the open, active, collaborative spaces being designed right now are genuinely difficult environments for Analysts. They are being asked to do their best thinking in conditions that actively work against them.

The Realist trusts what they can see, build, and measure. Abstract instruction without a concrete application is, for a Realist, mostly noise. They need to make, test, and see results — and they need a space that communicates that this kind of learning belongs here.

Why Thinking Styles Go Further Than Learning Styles

We talk about learning styles in education all the time and that conversation has real value. But thinking styles add a layer that learning styles frameworks don’t always reach. Learning styles describe how someone takes in information. Thinking styles describe what a mind does with that information once it has it — how it constructs meaning, approaches a problem, and decides what matters.

For those of us working in Learning Space Integration, that distinction is significant. We are not just designing for how students receive instruction. We are designing for the full arc of what learning looks like across a day — focused individual work, collaborative problem-solving, debate, making, reflection. Each of those moments belongs to a different cognitive style. A space that only supports one or two of them has already decided, without meaning to, which students get to do their best work there.

That is not student centered. That is student sorted.

What Each Style Actually Needs from a Space

When I think about this through a Radically Student Centered™ lens, each thinking style becomes a design requirement — something the space either supports or doesn’t.

The Synthesist needs furniture that reconfigures quickly, sightlines that allow students to face each other, and writable surfaces where competing ideas can live simultaneously in the room.

The Idealist needs warmth — soft zones, spaces designed for conversation and connection, visible student work that communicates “this is your community.”

The Pragmatist needs real flexibility — furniture on casters, modular configurations, spaces that physically say “you have permission to adapt this.”

The Analyst needs protected focus — acoustic separation, lower-stimulus zones, furniture that creates a sense of personal boundary without full isolation. In an era of open learning environments, the Analyst’s needs are the ones most at risk of being designed out entirely.

The Realist needs tangible surfaces — maker benches, project tables, and display infrastructure that treats work in progress with the same dignity as finished work.

The most powerful learning environments don’t compartmentalize these into separate rooms. They layer them — spaces where all five styles are accessible, where a student can shift from a quiet focus zone to a collaboration cluster to a maker bench as the work demands, and where a teacher can move through the whole environment without fighting the room to do it.

The Questions Worth Starting With

If you are a principal or administrator thinking about a renovation, a new build, or simply reimagining what you already have, try something before you open a single catalog.

Walk your space and ask:

Can a Synthesist find genuine friction and debate here? Can an Idealist feel connected and purposeful here? Can a Pragmatist experiment and reshape the environment itself? Can an Analyst find real quiet and focus when they need it? Can a Realist build, test, and see their work matter here?

If the honest answer to any of those is “not really” — that is not a furniture problem. That is a design conversation that hasn’t happened yet. And that conversation, the one that starts with students and works outward to space, is the one worth having first.

The desks and chairs will follow. But only the right ones, for the right reasons, when we start by asking why.
