The Future of Education Is Being Written Now… Are You Helping Shape It?

How Soft Trends Can Give Schools a Competitive Edge

Let’s talk about something that could completely shift how your school makes decisions:
Soft Trends.

A Soft Trend is a future possibility that’s likely to happen, but not guaranteed. And the most important part? We can influence it.

Unlike Hard Trends (like the aging population or increasing automation), Soft Trends are shaped by the choices we make. They’re not set in stone. They’re still forming and that means we have the power to steer them.

Think about the rise of remote work. Pre-pandemic, it was a growing trend, but not a certainty. When the world was forced to try it, some companies adapted quickly and shaped their policies around it. Spotify, for instance, leaned in early with a “Work from Anywhere” policy—and saw employee satisfaction rise and turnover drop. That’s the power of acting on a Soft Trend before it becomes a Hard one.

Or take AI in education. The tools are here. The possibilities are real. But how far they go, and how meaningfully they support learning, is still up to us. Schools and educators who explore how AI can support student engagement, personalization, and productivity are actively shaping this trend, not waiting for it to define them.

Too often, decision-makers see the shift coming but wait. They want more clarity. More proof. More budget. Meanwhile, another district down the road moves first – testing new furniture layouts, involving students in the design process, building flexibility into their classrooms – and suddenly they’re the model others are trying to catch.

On top of that, as a school leader, you might only get one shot at leaving your legacy through a school transformation. And that’s the real danger of hesitation. If you don’t take the opportunity to do it intentionally the first time with a clear vision, there may not be a second chance. And that means your students and staff could be stuck with outdated spaces for decades.

That’s why we created the Radically Student Centered™ Approach! To help schools act early and with confidence. Our team of educators are always working to help identify Soft Trends in education and helping schools shape them through design. It’s about staying ahead of the curve and making sure that students are well equipped well after graduation. Here’s what that looks like in action:

  • Collaboration is rising. So we design spaces where students can work together easily—with modular tables, mobile seating, and breakout zones.

  • Student voice is gaining momentum. So we include students in the planning process, gathering their feedback to influence furniture choices and layouts.

  • Hybrid learning and flexible schedules are expanding. So we help schools design environments that work for different teaching styles, learning paces, and room configurations.

So, here’s our challenge to you:
What Soft Trends are already on your radar?
More project-based learning? Wellness-focused spaces? More student autonomy?

And more importantly…
What are you doing now to shape them into something powerful for your school community?

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being proactive.

Let’s stop asking “What’s going to happen?” and start asking:
“What can we shape—together?”

We’re ready when you are.
